Valley of the Gods:  This National Monument is located just to the south of Cedar Mesa.

When I saw this butte I immediately thought of the human-headed winged lion of the ancient Assyrians called a lamassu from around the 9th century B.C.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has some more information on a lamassu sculpture that was excavated at Nimrud (ancient Kalhu), in northern Mesopotamia.
